Visage 1.3.1 released

Saturday, September 24th, 2005

Download it!

  • This update is only for OS 10.3 (Panther). If you are using another version of Mac OS X, please download the appropriate version of Visage from the main Visage page.
  • Fixed issue that could cause Visage to crash when importing images.
  • Fixed possible conflict with PowerController, the iTunes alarm clock. After opening Visage or PowerController in System Preferences, switching to the other preference pane occasionally resulted in an empty window in System Preferences, a non-functional "Register" button, or a registered app claiming that it wasn’t registered.
  • Provides the same improvements for Mac OS 10.3 users as Visage 2.2.1 added for OS 10.4 users.

LA Power Outage Takes Site Offline

Monday, September 12th, 2005

A massive power outage in Los Angeles took town the data center housing my servers on Monday, September 12. The backup power generators for the data center also failed (strike one for DreamHost). As a result, my website and associated services were not available for several hours on Monday. During this downtime, the SMS widget was not able to send text messages and displayed “There was a problem sending the SMS”.

I apologize for the inconvenience! Everything is back to normal now.

Check out the CNN article and the DreamHost blog for more information on the power outage.

Aloha,

SMS widget 1.5 Released!

Thursday, September 8th, 2005

Download it!

What’s new in version 1.5:

  • Added support for Verizon Pager in the USA.
  • Added support for O2 in Germany.
  • Improved unicode support for Address Book contacts.  Contact names with non-English characters now display correctly in the contact popup menu.

The SMS widget allows you to send text messages to mobile phones for free.  You don’t even need to have a phone at all!  The widget works with most major carriers in the USA and Canada as well as O2 and T-Mobile in Germany.

The SMS widget integrates with the Mac OS X Address Book, so you can quickly select friends to contact.  After you send a message, the widget remembers your friend’s carrier so that you don’t need to enter it in the future!  You can include your mobile number or email as the reply address of your messages.  This lets recipients reply to your SMS messages.

A free website for sending text messages is also available at:
http://keakaj.com/sms/sms.cgi

The widget currently supports:

  • Alltel, AT&T, Cingular, Nextel, Sprint, SunCom, T-Mobile, Verizon, Verizon Pager, Virgin Mobile, and Qwest in the USA.
  • Bell Mobility, Fido, Rogers, and TELUS in Canada.
  • O2 and T-Mobile in Germany

Canada added to SMS website

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

The SMS web interface now supports several Canadian mobile carriers:

  • Fido
  • Rogers
  • TELUS

You can also select “Beats me!” if you don’t know your friend’s Canadian mobile provider.

If you know people with Canadian cell phone numbers, please give the SMS web interface a try and let me know whether or not it works for you. As soon as I get feedback verifying that a particular carrier works, I’ll add support for the carrier to the Mac OS X SMS widget.

New news is good news!

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

I’ve created a new page for Sanity Software news (this is it). It will be much easier for me to keep the page updated now that I’m using WordPress to manage my news items. Before WordPress, the process for posting a news item and updating my RSS feed was far more cumbersome. Since this new page uses a new RSS feed, you’ll need to re-subscribe if you were subscribed to the old feed.
